We compare the population on January 1 between 1988-2014 living in the Netherlands, the Dutch Wadden area, the mainland Dutch Wadden coast, specific Dutch Wadden Sea harbour municipalities and on the Dutch Wadden islands. These different Wadden areas are all built on groups of municipalities (see Broersma and Mehnen, 2014). We first consider the developments in the total population between 1988-2014 and next look at the population of specific age groups for the same period.

This report provides an interpretation of the development of economic sectors in the Dutch Wadden area, based on conventional economic monitoring-data. We compare the employment in terms of the number of part-time and full-time jobs between 1996 and 2013 located in the Netherlands, the Dutch Wadden area, particular Dutch Wadden Sea harbour municipalities and on the Dutch Wadden islands.

Het rapport ‘Meetprogramma’s Waddengebied’ (versie oktober 2019) is een overzicht van huidige lopende lange-termijn basismeetprogramma’s en bevat korte beschrijvingen van de kerngegevens van ieder programma. Directe aanleiding tot bundeling van de meetprogramma’s is de behoefte aan een overzicht vanuit het Kernteam Basismonitoring van de Samenwerkingsagenda.

This report is aimed to contribute to the understanding of the Wadden area’s socioeconomy. A robust long term monitoring framework for the Wadden area ideally builds on a sound knowledge-base of the socioeconomic system and an understanding of how the system’s functioning in the Wadden area is distinctive.

Having received a World Heritage status in 2009 the Wadden Sea is recognized as one of the most important intertidal areas in the World (Baptist et al, 2007; Koffijberg & Smit, 2013). The Wadden Sea is not a pristine nature area, but also used by man. This human use may harm the natural values of the Wadden Sea, protected under de Natura2000 regime. Both human use and natural values are monitored, and some of this monitoring is required by law. This monitoring is of great value for science, policy and proper management of this unique area.

Population assessments are a primary component of wildlife conservation, but scientists are continuously under pressure to reduce survey cost. Survey design is therefore usually a trade-off between the scientific requirements of a study and the costs involved. In a relatively well studied area like the international Wadden Sea, comprehensive long-term datasets on population developments are available for numerous taxa.

The WaLTER project has the aim to prepare a structured monitoring plan for the Wadden area and provides available monitoring data on a data portal. This involves both ecological and physical and socio-economic data. In this brief report we elaborate on the monitoring data of “Demographics and Liveability” and show some first results of a pilot study with Partoer, and some first results from research conducted by bachelor students of the University of Groningen.

In this study we compare two methods to estimate the exposure times of the tidal flats in the Wadden Sea. One is based on a triangulation method applied to tidal gauge data (Rappoldt, 2014); the other uses output of the General Estuarine Transport Model (GETM) set up for the Dutch Wadden Sea (Duran-Matute et al., 2014).
