Options for socio-economic developments in the trilateral Wadden area

This study provides an overview of the recent demographic and socio-economic developments in the entire trilateral Wadden region at the very detailed spatial scale of municipalities bordering the Wadden Sea. We find that the area suffers from population decline and an aging population due to selective migration processes.

Consensus Forecasting of Intertidal Seagrass Habitat in the Wadden Sea

In the northern Wadden Sea litoral seagrass beds are are steadily expanding while in the central and southern Wadden Sea only small beds with low shoot densities remain since the extents of seagrass-covered areas started to decrease in the 1970s.

Tourism Development in the Dutch Wadden area: Spatial-Temporal Characteristics and Monitoring Needs

This paper presents a spatial-temporal analysis of tourism in the Dutch Wadden area and identifies policy dilemmas. The analysis is temporal because we address historical, current and future aspects of tourism development; it is spatial because we show the spatial differentiation within the Wadden area.

Developing an effective adaptive monitoring network to support integrated coastal management in a multiuser nature reserve

Integrated coastal management (ICM) has been promoted worldwide for attaining more sustainable management of coastal zones by means of a dynamic, multidisciplinairy, and iterative process. Integrated coastal managements seeks to balance long-term ecological, economic and soacial objectives within the limits set by natural dynamics (Bowen and Riley 2003, Olsen and Nickerson) 2003).

In this paper we address the characteristics of a publicly accessible Spatial Economic Ecological Database (SEED) and its ability to support a shared understanding among planners and experts of the economy and ecology of the Dutch Wadden area.
